16 Tips to Celebrate Earth Day Every Day:

BY TEAM AVA
APRIL 22, 2020

Every Year on April 22nd the world celebrates Earth Day. It is a wonderful time to come together and reflect on our carbon footprint, have conversations about sustainability and climate change.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. It is a special time to honor our planet and make an Earth Day resolution that we will keep.

On top of the 50th anniversary, Earth Day is also falling amidst one of the largest global events in recent history - the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). As humankind continues its effort to stop the virus from spreading, satellite imagining has shown we have significantly lessened our global carbon footprint. In response to these changes in our environment, wildlife and natural spaces are reaping some benefits.

All over the internet, new images and videos are appearing daily showing animals thriving in freshly deserted urban areas. This is so compelling for each individual to make lasting changes in our lives! As part of Earth Day pledge to make 3 new changes in your life to help the environment, here's a couple of ideas:

1. GROW YOUR OWN AT HOME:

The AVA Byte Smart Garden will grow fresh greens, year-round, empowering anyone to have access to the freshest, most nutritious and delicious food. The AVA Byte is the world’s smartest garden. It uses 95% less water than soil, all the packaging is bio-degradable or recyclable, we use LED Grow lights to save electricity and your food harvest will reduce your agricultural footprint.

2.  START A COMPOST:

Composing your scrap food at the end of a meal instead of throwing into the trash will allow you to accumulate less garbage. You can create compost in the back of your house. Or Check to see if your city collects compost already.

3. BUY LOCAL FOOD:

If you can’t grow your own, shop local. Buying farmers market produce guarantee it is grown close to home. That means less transportation and better quality.

4. RE-GROW YOUR VEGETABLE SCRAPS:

Use the ends of your vegetables and fruits to regrow them in an indoor space straight from your kitchen. Read more here.

5. ADD PLANTS:

Bringing a little green inside helps regulate your temperature when heating and cooling your room. Added bonus they boost productivity!

6. FIX & DIY INSTEAD OF BUY:

Why purchase brand new if you can fix what you already have. Many companies are starting to make changes to bring in garments and electronics to be fixed instead of being tossed. Watching DIY youtube tutorials there are countless videos to help you.

7. UNPLUG FROM ELECTRICITY

When not using or charging a device remove the plug from the electricity. Household appliances, coffee makers, toasters, lamps, phone charges all suck electricity when they are plugged in.

8. SWITCH TO ENERGY EFFICIENT BULBS:

You don’t need to have solar panels on your roof to go green at home. There are small changes like switching to energy-efficient light bulbs which use less electricity and last longer than regular bulbs.

8. LIGHTS OFF:

Remember to always switch off your lights when you leave a room, your home and when you go to bed.

10. AVOID PEAK HOURS:

In most cities energy companies will charge more during their peak electricity hours. Using your appliances during the “off” times will help save money and energy.

11. USE COLD WATER:

Using cold water uses up to 90% less energy when you wash in hot water. Washing your laundry on a cold water setting for one load a week is better for the environment and retains the quality of your clothing. Hot water will make your clothes shrink fade and wrinkle.

12. TURN OFF THE TAP:

Did you know you can save up to 80 gallons of water a day by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth? Consider taking shorter showers and turning off the water while you wash yourself.

13. AVOID SINGLE USE ITEMS:

Instead of paper towel use dry cloths, reusable straws, glass containers, reusable tote bags for shopping, refillable coffee mugs and reusable water bottles etc.

13. SHOP ECO-FRIENDLY HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS:

instead of single-use, disposable items look for green products that are reusable, recyclable, repairable and that come in eco-friendly packaging. Sustainable kitchen items like cotton bags, beeswax wrap and glass jars are great substitutes.

15. PURCHASE SECONDHAND:

Buying second hand is the easy way to lower your carbon footprint, there are so many great finds online through the Facebook marketplace, Ebay, Craigslist and Kijiji.

16. DITCH THE CAR

Leave your car at home - carpool, walk, take your bike out. Reduce the amount of pollution in the air and save some money on gas.
