How “smart” is your home?

These days, modern features like automatic light timers, pre-set settings for waking up, and even Alexa and Google Home integrated systems can make it seem like we’re living in the future. There are countless little appliances you can add to your home and they’re perfect for apartment gifts too.

Over 34.8 million Americans are already living a smart home lifestyle and this number is expected to increase dramatically over the next several years.

Smart homes feature integrated appliances and specialized control systems that can be controlled remotely from anywhere in the world. This improved control over the home has extensive implications for improving life for busy parents, frequent travelers, elderly, and just about anyone else.

Here’s how a smart home can make your life easier:

1. PEACE OF MAIN WITH A CLICK OF A BUTTON

Just like a regular home, smart homes include lights, appliances, thermostats, curtains, shades, door locks and security features. Except, in a smart home all these features can be controlled remotely with technology.

Has the following ever happened to you?

Time is ticking, you’re late for work, and nothing is going as planned. You still need to drop your kids off at school, their lunches haven’t been made yet, and a whole list of other headaches are begging for your attention.

Halfway to work, you wonder…

“Did I leave my stove on?”

With a traditional home, this might mean driving back 30-minutes just to find out you did in fact turn your stove off…

With a smart home, you can set up an automatic group of commands. For example, a group can be called “leaving home” and can include commands to shut off lights and appliances, lower shades, adjust the thermostat, lock doors and yes, even turn your stove off.

You’ll be able to do all of this with a simple push of a button as you leave your home. Even if you’re halfway to work, you can hop on your mobile phone (not while driving, of course!) and just like that, peace of mind!

2. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CHILD - EVEN WHILE AT WORK

f you’re a parent, it can be worrying if you’re at work and don’t know whether or not your child has made it back home safely from school yet. With a smart home, you receive a notification anytime the doors to the house are locked or unlocked. Smart home systems also feature video surveillance technology, so  you can see who has entered your home. If there is an intruder in the house, an alarm can be activated to warn homebound children of a potential danger within.

According to mortgage providers, Maxiron Capital, these bonus safety features alone make investing in a smart home worth it, noting that, “most new home owners are moving to a new area and their primary concern is safety. With a smart home, you can rest easy knowing your home is as safe as it can be. That itself is worth the added investment”.

3. A BETTER LIFE FOR THE ELDERY AND DISABLED

Consider an elderly woman busy in her kitchen one afternoon. If the doorbell rings, she will have to stop what she is doing, wash and dry her hands and expend time to greet a potential nosy solicitor or unknown guest to her home. While fine for most, for an elderly or disabled person, this can be an inconvenience.

With a smart home, she can now check who is at the front door from a live video feed on her Google Home or Echo Show (or similar device). From there, she can conveniently communicate with anyone from anywhere at home.

The myriad benefits of smart home devices continue for those who have limited mobility. Doors can be locked, shades can be drawn, thermostats can be set, lights can be switched on, breakfast can be made, all from the comfort of bed with the use of voice commands.

4. TRAVEL THE WORLD AND NEVER NEED A HOUSE SITTER

How would you like to travel and not have to worry about your home on the other side of the world?

Aside from one-button access to home cameras and devices, in the event of an emergency or even “keeping up appearances” of your home being lived in, you can simply make it look like someone is home everyday by programming your shades to open and close at given intervals or by turning on the lights, TV or music.

Thanks to your smart home’s integrated surveillance system. If you see something suspicious happening, you can raise the alarm from many miles away and even call a patrol unit to investigate any suspicious activities.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Smart homes are fun and fascinating but they are much more than a spiffy new gadget for the extravagant. Smart homes make life easier; we have many demands on our lives and smart homes help take a few of those demands and potential stressors off of our plates. Whether you’re a green thumb, parent who has to juggle multiple jobs and still keep track of their children, someone with limited physical mobilty or a jetset traveller, you can now manage your plants and your home from anywhere, stress and worry free!

Smart homes go a long way in helping make life a little easier.
