How To Turn Your Vegetable Scraps Into The Best Indoor Garden!

COVID-19 has shed a lot of light onto our food supply chain. Due to social distancing and fear of food shortages, there has been a surge in people turning to solutions to become more self-sufficient from bread-making to indoor growing. There is a movement to know your food or grow it. 

When making trips to the grocery store that have become increasingly more difficult, DIY home gardening is becoming more popular. Whether you want to start your own indoor garden or learn more about zero-waste and using food scraps, there are some great tips to make all your leftover food waste count.

These tips can help you save money, cut down food waste, teach you about nature, sustainability and gardening turning your inedible scraps into a garden of Eden.

SAVE YOUR VEGETABLE SCRAPS TO START YOUR OWN INDOOR GARDEN!

You don’t need to go out and buy any seeds to start your first indoor home garden, just some leftovers. Food scraps like onions, potatoes, pineapple, garlic, and carrots are great.

10 VEGETABLE & FRUIT THAT CAN BE RE-GROWN FROM YOUR KITCHEN:

Green Onions:

Green onions are one of the easiest and most popular vegetables to re-grow. All you need is to cut about an inch from the root and leave them in water. After a couple of days, all your green onions will start sprouting. You can use this technique all year round. Be sure to remove off any brown leaves and change your water regularly.

Leafy Greens:

Lettuce, Bok Choy and Cabbage can all be regrown from their base. Instead of throwing these leftovers away, leave them to the side by cutting off the base of the leafy green and place them in a bowl of water halfway up the root. You can grow your leafy scarps on a sunny windowsill year-round until they start to shoot up. After 3-5 days, the leaves will start regrowing and you can transfer the stumps into a pot of soil. When you plant your base make sure the roots are covered and the top of the is exposed.

Celery:

Celery grows much like lettuce. Cut off the base of the celery leaves and place them in a bowl of water with adequate sunlight. When new leaves start sprouting in the middle, let them get thick for a week before you transfer the celery into a pot of soil.

Potatoes:

Leave your potatoes in a dark space for a while. Once you see that the potatoes are starting to sprout you know they are ready. Cut the potatoes in half and plant them in soil with the skin facing upwards. The potatoes will start sprouting in a couple of weeks.

Another method that can be used, peels your potato into two-inch pieces making sure they have the ‘eye’ on them. Let them dry out overnight. Then in the morning put them in soil 4 inches deep. Make sure your eye is facing up when planting Water your soil and in a few weeks your potato plant will start to grow.

Onions:

Onions can be regrown from a bulb. Cut off the end of the bulb so there is still about 1 inch of onion. Place the rooted part down in water 1/2 inch deep, ensuring water is covering the root but not the top. Change the water to ensure it is fresh. Once the shoot has sprout you can plant your onion.

For a mature onion bulb, you can skip the first step of having the onion in water and instead go straight to soil. Cut off 1 inch of the onion and place it in a pot, make sure you cover it with a layer of soil. Water your pot to keep the soil moist. You can keep cutting the green sprouts off when they regrow.

Avocado:

This superfood can be re-grown from his seed. After you’ve enjoyed your avocado wash off the seed and use a toothpick to suspend it over a bowl of water. The water should come up just to the point where it covers the bottom inch of the seed. Leave the seed in the container in a warm place, not in direct sunlight. Check on your seed often and remember to change the water. It takes about 6 weeks for the stem and roots to appear but when the stem reaches 6 inches you will need to cut it down by half. After the leaves start appearing you can plant the seeds in the soil. You will have to leave about half the seed above ground.

Pineapple:

Take your delicious pineapple and cut off the top. Add a couple of toothpicks to the top and hold it over a container filled with water. However, make sure you leave your pineapple in direct sun in a warm location. You can even leave it outside on a porch during the day to make sure it gets lots of sun. Keep adding water into the bowl to make sure the base reaches the liquid. You will notice that roots will start to form after about a week. Once they have formed you can transplant your pineapple into a pot of soil or garden.

Garlic:

Take one or two cloves from your garlic and place them in a cup of water for a 3-5 days. After the tops start to sprout you can cultivate the top like green onions. Or you can transfer the garlic roots down in a pot of soil. Garlic likes plenty of direct sun so keep it in a warm space. Keep it outdoors in the sun during the day but be sure to bring it inside during the night. You will notice that shoots will start to pop up so cut the shoots back and your plant will produce a bulb. Once you have your new bulb you can plant it again.

Carrots:

Root plants like carrots grow well from leftovers. You can chop off the top of the plant and place it in a container of water leaving the top uncovered. After a couple of days you will notice new greens forming. Allow the roots to keep coming in until they are ready to be transplanted into the ground.

Bean Sprouts:

Take your leftover bean sprouts and soak them in a jar with shallow water. Leave them soaking overnight and then drain the water in the morning and leave them in the container for the rest of the day. Put the beans in a container with a towel overnight and rinse them the next morning. Keep doing this process until the bean sprouts start to grow to the size you want them to be.
