What we do in our lives impacts other people or the planet in some way or another. How can we be more sustainable in our day-to-day lives to not only better ourselves, but the planet as well? Here are 5 actionable things to do in your daily routine to live more sustainably:
1. DO AN INVENTORY AUDIT
Do a review of everything you own and see what you don’t need. For example with your clothing, ask yourself: what do you already have? Do you need more of it? What are items you haven’t used in over a year? Is there a way to sustainably recycle it or hand it off to someone else?
Declutter and see if certain items still bring value to your life or if it’s something you’re clinging onto. Whether that be an old sweater hiding in the back of your closet from three years ago, to the canned food that's hiding in your pantry, only keep what's necessary.
2. BE MINDFUL OF HOW YOU SPEND YOUR DOLLAR
When purchasing new items, think about where your items came from. For example with a new shirt, ask yourself if you are buying it to hop on a fad that will die out in a couple of months, or if it’s something you can use for years to come.
Draw boundaries about the way you shop. Ask yourself some basic questions on how your products are being made. How are the materials for your product sourced? Is the person making it receiving a fair, liveable wage? A few ways to be mindful while purchasing products is to shop locally, purchase second hand, and get informed of the company’s commitment to sustainability.
3. HOW MUCH ENERGY ARE YOU REALLY USING?
Be mindful of the energy you're consuming such as turning off the light, minimizing your shower time, and turn off gadgets or appliances when not in use. If possible, switch to more sustainable, long-term replacements for household essentials such as replacing shower heads with more water-efficient ones. 4. MAKE SUSTAINABLE SWAPS WITH EVERYDAY DISPOSABLE ITEMS
Make changes around your home and replace items you would usually use to dispose of. Replace plastic bottles with a reusable one, paper towels with a cloth, sandwich bags with silicone snack bags, and so on. These changes will not only save you money in the long run but can be reused over a longer period of time.

5. KEEP LEARNING!
Being a conscious consumer is a continuous journey of educating ourselves and those around us for a better future on how we can all be sustainable citizens. Keeping up with reliable and credited articles, learning and sharing knowledge with others, and staying informed will not only guide you to more information but will help you strengthen your knowledge on sustainability.
These five steps are an ongoing process of learning and continuously reminding ourselves about the impact one person can make. It’s a long-term commitment to be sustainable, however, the positive impact you create will lead to a better future.
