The earliest versions of romaine were depicted on the walls of Ancient Egyptian tombs, dating back to at least 2,700 BC. However, lettuce was not a popular culinary ingredient at this time, it was used as a symbol to represent Min, the God of Fertility.
Although more heat tolerant than other varieties of lettuce, Little Gem thrives best in a cooler environment with moisture-rich soil. Little Gem can be grown for baby greens, or for a miniature head of lettuce.
Farmers harvest their salad greens in the morning when the leaves have high water content; harvest your AVA salad greens after the pump has run for the crunchiest lettuce. You can harvest the whole head of lettuce between 30-40 days or as soon as it is big enough to use. For a continual harvest, pick the outer leaves around 20-25 days and allow the inner leaves to keep growing. Watch our "Harvesting Salad Greens" video to make sure you're cutting your lettuce properly or else it may not grow back properly. We recommend not harvesting more than 3 times, as your lettuce will become more bitter in flavour.
Little Gems high amount of potassium that can help in the maintenance of cardiovascular health.
A source of vitamin A, C & K. High in minerals such as calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, and potassium. Romaine has twice the protein and calcium than iceberg lettuce, plus 8 times the vitamin C!
